Independent studios rank funding and discoverability above technical problems

A Playful survey found that studios most often struggle with funding, discoverability, marketing, community building and publisher relationships rather than production skills.

Independent studios are more worried about reaching the market than building the product, according to survey findings published by Playful. Respondents ranked funding, discoverability, marketing, community development and publisher relationships above programming, art and production challenges. Funding was the single most commonly named problem. Studios also described player validation as a multi-purpose business tool: feedback informs design decisions, strengthens publisher conversations, supports fundraising and reduces the risk of investing heavily in the wrong direction. Despite those obstacles, the survey found continued optimism among developers about the future of their teams and projects. The pattern reinforces a familiar industry gap. Production tools and expertise have become more accessible, but distribution, finance and proof of demand remain scarce. This is directional research rather than a population-wide benchmark. Playful says the work combines a survey of independent studios across New Zealand, Australia, North America and Europe with hundreds of studio conversations, but the public summary does not disclose a precise respondent count. That limitation matters when interpreting percentages or comparing regions.
