GameMaker will make GMRT free for commercial distribution in 2027
The new licensing approach starts on 1 January. Console releases will still require an Enterprise licence and platform-holder approval.
GameMaker says developers using its next-generation runtime will be able to sell games across desktop, mobile, web and GX Games without buying Professional. Source access will also be available across tiers. Existing Professional owners retain commercial rights for the GMS2 runtime. This is a runtime-specific change, not a promise that every export target or existing licence becomes free; source availability should not be confused with an unrestricted open-source licence.
