We've gone with a retro genre - ball & paddle - and introduced modern twists to create an experience that is both nostalgic and fresh, while not being too intimidating to newcomers to create their own content.

Each level is a handcrafted "painting" of blocks of various shapes, sizes, types, and modifiers. These levels are then randomized in various ways to prevent any two levels from being identical. Players orbit their paddle around this field to collect gems that pop out from destroyed blocks. The goal of each level is to clear it of poppable blocks.

Mondrian combines impressionistic background paintings with modernist foreground shapes. The backgrounds are inspired by our playable artists, though are not exact duplicates of any of their works. Players can also easily bring in their own background art thanks to included Photoshop templates. The character designs are inspired by 90's cartoons to give them life & style, and the UI itself is also modern, combining flat colors & shading with soft corners and "charcoal" outlines and drop shadows. Since a game about art should be visually appealing, we place a heavy emphasis on making every level as visually stimulating as possible, with particle fireworks shows, dynamically generated color combinations, exciting visual effects, and skillfully painted backdrops.

Mondrian's music is very hip-hop, jazz, and soul inspired, but veering into different subgenres depending on the character being played. For instance, Hale's soundtrack is slightly more bluesy guitar, while Lois's soundtrack is more swinging brass. The game's sound effects, meanwhile, are fun, classic, videogamey stuff; primarily computer generated with a few real world touches for, say, some of the tools in the level editor. Mondrian also features stereo sound and works great with high quality headphones!

Mondrian has a heavy focus on dual+ purpose design and dynamic generation. The game draws a lot of inspiration from Roguelite games, so concepts like permadeath and random level elements like powerup placement play a big role in mixing up every level. The game's collectible gems have different effects on every ball and paddle type, for instance, growing the Stretch Paddle, or healing the Breakerball.

For the rest of 2019, we are focusing on updating the Level Tech, writing the game's story, coding the Campaign and Boss Rush Modes, updating Core Gameplay Math, and integrating the mod.io API for content sharing. This will bring us to Alpha in January 2020 with 50 "Arcade" levels done, 50 "Campaign" levels done, an integrated story, and multiple boss modes. Beta will begin in February with the inclusion of Steamworks features, and deeper Controller compatibility in Mondrian Maker. We plan to Launch on Steam in March 2020 (PC and Mac), with optional level pack DLC, and plenty of free content on Steam Workshop and mod.io. For the rest of 2020-2021, we'll be making Small Weekly improvements, Big Monthly improvements, DLC, promoting community content, localization, and porting.
